Biography
Background
Hvidt & Mølgaard is the Danish partnership of Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993). They met at the cabinetmakers' school of the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where Hvidt began as Mølgaard-Nielsen's student and later taught beside him. Their first success as a duo was winning the 1943 competition of the Swedish Slöjdföreningen. Their Copenhagen firm, founded in 1944, grew into a design and architecture practice that lasted until 2009.
Signature Style
&Tradition describes a simple and precise aesthetic and a forward-looking approach to industrial production. The AX lounge chair of 1950 used laminated wood, so that it could be made in large numbers and exported.
