Collection Story

Origin

Boomerang is the lounge chair that the duo Hvidt & Mølgaard drew in 1956 and that &Tradition re-launched in a press release for HM1 and HM2. The release says the chair debuted in 1956 and calls it a mid-century classic, and the product pages describe it as a masterpiece of Danish design. Both pages list the Boomerang Collection as two pieces, HM1 and HM2.

Design Language

The press release describes a no-frills form: a hand-polished wooden frame that echoes the L-shaped symmetry of the chair's Australian namesake, on slender brass legs that splay out at an angle. According to the release, the designers stripped the frame of superfluous detail and used their technical skills to maximise comfort, with a relaxed slant of the back, the option of a version with arm rests and reversible pillows with removable covers. Martin Kornbek Hansen, &Tradition's CEO and founder, is quoted: "The Boomerang’s appeal lies in its stark simplicity, but this streamlined form is deceptive".

Key Pieces

  • HM1, the lounge chair without armrests, listed at 80 cm high, 61 cm wide and 79 cm deep
  • HM2, the version with armrests (armrest height 58 cm), 69 cm wide

The sheets for both pieces give the same production process: a frame of milled solid wood, spring wires of plastic covered coiled spring steel, fittings of lasercut metal and brass or stainless steel legs coned with a special tool. The frame comes in oiled oak or oiled walnut, and the press release names White oiled oak and Oiled walnut. The Manufacturer lines of the product pages name two production countries, whereas the release says &Tradition is proud to resume production in Denmark.
