Biography
Background
Vincent Van Duysen was born in Lokeren, Belgium, in 1962. He earned his degree at the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Ghent, then worked with Aldo Cibic in Milan and afterwards collaborated with Jean De Meulder in Antwerp. In 1989 he established his own practice, Vincent Van Duysen Architects.
Signature Style
From the outset Van Duysen has treated architecture, interiors and product design as one continuous discipline, letting subtle transitions between them shape each project. His work is a constant search for essence: pure, tactile materials, deep respect for context and tradition, and clean, timeless spaces that put sensory experience, functionality, durability and comfort ahead of fleeting trends. He describes protection as something we all need, and something he wants to translate into his architecture and design.
Notable Works
Since 2016 he has been Creative Director of Molteni&C, for which he has designed a broad catalogue of upholstery, tables, storage, kitchens and accessories, including the Paul, Augusto, Julian, Cleo and Octave sofas, the Walter, Elain and Paula armchairs, the Mateo and Aria tables, the Hector and Logos living systems and the VVD kitchen.
Legacy
His distinctions include the Flemish Culture Prize for Design, Belgian Designer of the Year, the Henry van de Velde Lifetime Achievement Award and an EDIDA for Best Interior Designer of the Year, and he has appeared several times on Architectural Digest's AD100 and the Elle Decor A-List.
