Elain

Overview

Elain (2018) is a Molteni&C armchair that Vincent Van Duysen designed. The datasheet calls it a cosy, curvaceous little armchair designed to fit easily into any setting, and the page a compact yet inviting armchair that embodies warmth and simplicity.

Construction

Elain consists of just two parts, a seat and a backrest, which come together to form a perfectly rounded object. The datasheet names an inside structure of elastic straps, wood particle panels and solid fir (Picea abies), padded with polimex infills and polyurethane foam under a bonded velveteen cover.

Specifications

• HPL1 armchair on feet and HPL2 swivel armchair: both 80 cm wide and 84 cm deep; the drawing's tallest vertical value is 68 cm, which is not labelled on the drawing
• Feet finish: pewter colour; swivel base finish: black

Two parts, one rounded object

The datasheet describes Elain as consisting of just two parts, a seat and a backrest, that come together to form a perfectly rounded object which invites you simply to sit down. It says the padded seat and back give snug, welcoming lines, whether the armchair is upholstered in quality textiles or in soft leather.

Alone, in pairs, in public spaces

According to the datasheet, Elain can sit alongside sofas also designed by Vincent Van Duysen, on its own as a comfy armchair, or as a twin to create discreet little conversation corners. The page and the datasheet both name hotel lobbies among the public spaces where it can appear.
