Biography

Background

GamFratesi is the Copenhagen design studio founded in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam (born 1975), who holds a master's in furniture design, and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi (born 1978), who holds a master's in industrial design. Before starting their own studio, both gained experience in architecture studios in Japan and Scandinavia.

Signature Style

Their work draws its drive from a fusion of tradition and renewal and an experimental approach to materials and techniques. They combine the classic Danish furniture and craft tradition with the Italian intellectual and conceptual approach, creating furniture that respects tradition while carrying embedded stories, symbols and associations, often in a minimalist idiom.

Notable Works

For GUBI, with whom they have worked since the studio's inception, they designed the Beetle Chair (2013), which has grown into a family of dining, lounge, meeting and soft versions, as well as the Epic tables and the Violin chair. They also collaborate with companies such as Bang & Olufsen, Cappellini, Dedon, Fritz Hansen, Hermès, Louis Poulsen, Poltrona Frau, Porro, Minotti and Gebrüder Thonet Vienna.

Legacy

GamFratesi were named International Designer of the Year at the Elle Decoration International Design Awards (EDIDA) in 2020, after being Young Designer of the Year in 2013. They received the Finn Juhl Prize (2015) and the Bruno Mathsson Prize (2018), and were listed in the AD100 in 2022 and 2023.
