Brand Story

Heritage

Fredericia was founded in 1911 as Fredericia Stolefabrik (Fredericia Chair Factory) in the Danish city that gave it its name, and it quickly became known for high-quality furniture in traditional styles. In 1955 the entrepreneur Andreas Graversen took the company in a new direction, joining its heritage of quality furniture with modernist ideals in close collaboration with Børge Mogensen, Fredericia's first house designer.

Philosophy

Fredericia calls itself a co-founder of Danish Modern design and is committed to transparency, authentic materials and human empathy. Graversen, CEO from 1955 to 1995, summed up the approach as striving for "clarity, good materials, human empathy, and above all strength – both in design and business." The company is family-owned and B Corp certified, and it describes its aim as authentic, purposeful designs that are crafted to last.

Iconic Works

Mogensen's intuitive sense of materials and proportion produced pieces still celebrated by collectors and museums, among them the Spanish Chair (1958) and the J39 chair. Over the years the circle widened to Nanna Ditzel and Hans J. Wegner, and later to Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, Jasper Morrison, Maria Bruun, Keiji Takeuchi and Cecilie Manz. In 2020 Fredericia acquired Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik, adding a range of classic sofas to its archive.

Today

Fredericia is still owned by the Graversen family and keeps local production for selected designs in Fredericia and Svendborg. It runs flagship showrooms in Copenhagen, London and Oslo, with further showrooms in Tokyo and Stockholm.
