Biography
Background
Neri&Hu Design and Research Office was founded in 2006 by partners Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu as an inter-disciplinary architectural design practice based in Shanghai. Rossana Hu, born in Taiwan in 1968, studied architecture and music at UC Berkeley, where she met Lyndon Neri, and earned a master's in architecture at Princeton; in 2021 she became chair of the architecture department at Tongji University.
Signature Style
The practice anchors its ethos on research and on the dynamic interaction of experience, detail, material, form and light, rather than conforming to a formulaic style. Shanghai's cultural, urban and historic contexts are the point of departure for work across scales, from master planning and architecture to interiors, furniture, products, branding and graphics.
Notable Works
For Stellar Works, where the pair provide creative direction, Neri&Hu designed the Utility collection (launched 2013). Wikipedia cites architecture such as the Lantern Sulwhasoo store, the Fuzhou Teahouse and the Aranya Art Center.
Legacy
Recognition includes the Wallpaper Designers of the Year* (2014), Interior Design Hall of Fame (2013), Dezeen Architecture Studio of the Year (2021), the Frame Lifetime Achievement Award (2021) and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture (2025).
