Brand Story
Heritage
Moooi was founded in 2001 by designer Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers in the Netherlands. According to Wikipedia, Wanders first approached Vissers to help him market a designer lamp shade, and together they set up the company to work with unconventional designers. Its first international show was the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2001. The name plays on the Dutch word mooi, meaning beautiful; Moooi says the extra "o" conveys something extra in beauty and uniqueness. The company is headquartered in Breda, with a brand store and showroom in Amsterdam's Jordaan (opened 2008) and in New York (2015).
Philosophy
Moooi describes its collection as original, unexpected, eclectic, rebellious and sophisticated, always on the edge of commercial reality and cultural interest: a curated mix of lighting, furniture and accessories meant to outlast everyday interiors and give spaces personality. The brand says it does not tell designers what to do but listens to what they want to make, working with both emerging talent and internationally recognised names.

Iconic Works
Among Moooi's originals is Bertjan Pot's Random Light, a sphere of resin-soaked coiled yarn that was one of the first designs Marcel Wanders curated for the collection in 2001 and became an instant icon. Wanders himself is both art director and one of the brand's designers, alongside names such as Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Front, Studio Job and Piet Hein Eek.

Today
Moooi now carries lighting, furniture, accessories, wallcovering and carpet collections, available in 82 countries through retailers, project and contract dealers, its own brand stores and its website. Through its Moooi Originals programme the brand revisits early designs, such as the Random Light II, to improve them while keeping the original idea.
