Description
Overview
The Eames Sofa Compact is a six-foot-wide, three-seat sofa from Charles and Ray Eames. Herman Miller has produced the current model continuously since 1954.
Construction
Urethane foam seat cushions on reinforced rubber webbing over a steel and wire-spring armature, with a black enamel steel frame and chrome-plated tubular steel legs. The back is made of two foam pads.
Specifications
The sofa is 72.5 in wide, 30 in deep and 35 in high, values not labelled on the drawing.
Story
Built in, then freestanding
Herman Miller's design story says the sofa began as a built-in sofa in the Pacific Palisades house the Eameses designed for themselves in the 1940s, before a freestanding version, first in wire and then the current model.

Scaled for small spaces
The page calls the design crisp and light scaled, perfect for smaller rooms in which a traditional sofa would look bulky.
