Biography
Background
Roberto Lazzeroni was born in Pisa in 1950. The Italian embassy in Washington says he graduated in fine art in Florence in 1974 and studied at the Faculty of Architecture, where he met his mentor Adolfo Natalini; Flexform adds a keen interest in conceptual art and Radical Design. His professional career began in 1980 with residential interiors, among them Villa Firenze in Florence (1981), Villa Montespertoli in Chianti (1983) and Villa Hinkelman in Porto Cervo (1986).
Signature Style
Lazzeroni calls his style "sentimental design". Flexform describes designs in which the tension between past and present is easy to perceive, free of industrial geometries and decorative excess, placing objects in a story, a tradition or a memory. The embassy text says it avoids both aesthetic frivolity and the severity of minimalism and sets his objects within the tradition of cabinetmaking and artisanship.
Notable Works
He was appointed art director of Ceccotti Collezioni in 1988 and has worked with Acerbis, Baxter, Casamilano, Driade, Flexform, Gervasoni, Giorgetti, Gufram, Lema, Poliform, Poltrona Frau and Zanotta. For Flexform he designed the Alfred sofa of 2016 and the Dragonfly bed, Drop armchair and Crown table; for Poltrona Frau, the Fidelio bench and cabinet.
Legacy
Flexform names him as the designer responsible for the MOOD collections of 2015, 2016 and 2017, and in 2017 the company marked ten years of collaboration with him. The embassy lists exhibitions between 1991 and 1999 in Paris, London, Chicago, Genoa and Milan, and contract work such as the Ferrari Retailers Project in Maranello (2013).
