Biography
Background
Michael Anastassiades (born 1967) grew up in Cyprus and is based in London. He trained in industrial design and engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, and founded his design studio in 1994. As a child he always carried a pencil; he credits the Cypriot architect Neoptolemos Michailides, a friend of his father, with shaping the way he sees things.
Signature Style
His lamps, mirrors and tables sit between industrial design and the decorative arts: pure geometric forms, balance and a focus on the glow of light. "When designing a light, I always start from the glow," he says.
Notable Works
- IC Lights for Flos (2014)
- Arrangements for Flos, winner of the Compasso d'Oro in 2020
- Coordinates for Flos; lighting for the Hagia Sophia in London
- Work for Svenskt Tenn and Verreum
Legacy
After first producing his own designs to realise ideas without compromise, he began working with Flos and has become one of its defining contemporary designers.
