Biography
Background
Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba are architects and designers who founded Palomba Serafini Associati in Milan in 1994. Their own studio site and Poltrona Frau both name them as a pair, written Ludovica Serafini + Roberto Palomba. Poltrona Frau's designer text says the practice covers architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion and yacht design.
Signature Style
The studio's about page describes a hallmark that comes from joining a contemporary reading of society and of what users need with a broad knowledge of the historical and cultural roots of design, so that the results blend past and future. It adds that this makes them attentive to function and to products that last. In the Poltrona Frau text they call their approach "holistic": every detail is developed with an overall vision in mind.
Notable Works
For Poltrona Frau the studio's site lists the Let it be sectional sofa (2017) and the Solaria outdoor collection (2021, extended in 2024 with a low-backed armchair, a table in four sizes and a dining chair); the Blisscape seating system appears on the company's pages. The studio's work list also names the BeBop and Belvedere chairs and the Albert table for Kartell, All Around for Giorgetti, Lama, Noli and Pianoalto for Zanotta, Birdie and Fly Fly for Foscarini, collections for Ideal Standard, and architecture projects such as Palazzo Daniele.
Legacy
The about page lists the Compasso d'Oro in 2011, honourable mentions of it in 2014 and 2016, the Archiproducts Design Award in 2017 for Let it be, and in 2019 the Ahead Award for Best Europe Hotel of the year for Palazzo Daniele. Poltrona Frau's text counts more than 70 awards over the studio's first thirty years.
