Biography

Background

EOOS is a design studio from Vienna, founded in 1995 by Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl. German Wikipedia says the three met while studying at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the class of Paolo Piva. The studio's own About page says it spent a decade on store design for clients such as Armani and Adidas, and set up a social design division in 2010.

Signature Style

The studio works with a method it calls poetical analysis, which treats design as a poetic discipline and uses intuitive images, rituals and mythological stories as starting points. On its site EOOS describes itself as an author-driven studio that creates furniture and products for international manufacturers in Europe and North America.

Notable Works

  • Embrace Armchair for Carl Hansen & Søn (2015) and Embrace Table (2019), listed with those years on the studio's site
  • Embrace series pieces for Carl Hansen & Søn including the E015 lounge chair, E004 chair, sofa and outdoor models
  • Crosshatch for Geiger, MillerKnoll (2014), Sheru EVO for Walter Knoll (2023) and ST8 for Hussl (2022)
  • Blue Diversion Toilet (2011), Social Furniture (2015) and ZUV (2021) from the social design work

Recognition

The studio states more than 250 international design awards. It represented Austria at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale and the 2019 Milan Triennale, and the MAK in Vienna showed an EOOS exhibition in 2015 for its 20th anniversary.
