Description
Overview
The LC2 Fauteuil Grand Confort, petit modèle sofa is the sofa version of the iconic LC2 armchair, "fashioned by Cassina and Charlotte Perriand" as, in Cassina's words, "the ideal synthesis of form and function". Cassina names Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier as the designers. The two-seat model (002 2_/F_) is 130 cm wide, 70 cm deep and 67 cm high; a three-seat model (002 3_/G_) is 180 cm wide.
Construction
Loose cushions rest on a tubular steel frame finished in polished chrome or paint; they are padded with variable density polyurethane foam and a polyester fibre batting that carries a resin treatment and is laminated to a fabric lining. Covers are fabric or leather. In Cassina's words the division between the metal structure and the cushions follows the principles of Rationalism.

Story
Archetype of modernity
The sofa grows out of the well-known LC2 petit modèle armchair. Cassina says it was shaped by the company together with Charlotte Perriand and calls it the ideal combination of form and function, a design masterpiece that does not date.
A modern concept of furnishings
According to Cassina, the armchair was conceived for easy conversation and shown at the 1929 Salon d'Automne in Paris. Cassina describes it as an archetype of the modern way of furnishing, which its authors saw as "household equipment". Keeping the metal structure and the cushions apart fits the principles of Rationalism, and so does dividing the parts on an industrial approach to production, recalling how a building's loadbearing structure relates to its in-fill elements.
