Description

Overview

The Eames Wire Base Low Table Outdoor is a small, low table by Charles and Ray Eames, in production since 1950 and re-engineered with a stone top for outdoor use.

Construction

A welded wire-rod base in weather-resistant powder coat carries a two-centimetre stone slab with a beveled, honed edge, in grey or black stone with a white or graphite base.

Specifications

One size is offered, with a footprint of 15.5 by 13.25 in and a height of 10 in; the official store lists a table weight of 21 lb and says it comes fully assembled.

Story

From welded wire to a garden table

Herman Miller traces the table to the Eameses' postwar experiments with new industrial processes, including welded wire. They developed a method for welding many wire rods at once, and the table base that resulted could be adapted to both large and small surfaces.

Reengineered for the weather

The outdoor edition keeps the form and swaps the plywood top for stone with a beveled edge derived from the original. The company says the small table is more useful than ever now that it has been made to weather the elements.
