Description

Via Dezza armchair

Molteni&C identifies D.153.1 as the armchair Gio Ponti designed in 1953 for his private home on Via Dezza in Milan. The company reintroduced it from drawings held in the Gio Ponti Archives and exhibited the re-edition at Salone del Mobile in 2012.

Structure and cover

A solid-fir upholstered structure uses elastic straps, shaped polyurethane of several thicknesses and a bonded-velveteen lining. Solid-fir armrests receive their own shaped padding. Heat-sealed steel legs have a satin brass finish and non-slip plastic feet. The cover can be removed by qualified personnel.

Published data

The drawing gives 77, 103 and 80 cm as its principal values; the axes are not labelled. Two additional vertical values, 35 and 49 cm, remain unassigned.

Story

A chair from Ponti's own home

D.153.1 began as part of the furniture for Gio Ponti's Milan residence rather than as an anonymous catalogue exercise. Molteni&C links the 1953 design directly to Via Dezza and to Ponti's archival drawings.

Textile connection

The official sheet pairs the armchair with two-tone leather or Punteggiato velvet, a pattern Ponti designed for Rubelli in 1934. Molteni&C describes that textile as a contemporary interpretation of traditional velvet weaving through staggered discs and tonal gradations.
