Description
Overview
The D.154.2 armchair is by Gio Ponti; Molteni&C dates it 1953-57 (the villa project) and 2015 (the reissue). The page and the sheet say it was designed for the Villa Planchart in Caracas (1953-57), the villa of the Planchart collectors, one of the projects closest to Ponti's heart, with an embracing, sinuous silhouette. The page lists the Compasso d'Oro Career Award for Products (2024) and the Wallpaper Design Awards (2016).
Construction
The sheet describes an armchair that is like a cosy shell, with a rigid polyurethane frame, a soft polyurethane counter-frame and a cushion: an external structure of compact cold moulded polyurethane; an internal structure with an electro-welded metal frame and flexible cold moulded polyurethane; a seat cushion with a shaped polyurethane insert and polyester fibre covered in resin treated bonded velveteen; and feet in chromed steel with plastic non-slip floor slides, in black chrome. The cover can be removed by expert personnel; the sheet notes that covers are difficult to remove.

Story
Designed for Villa Planchart
Molteni&C's page says the D.154.2 was born from a deeply personal project, the Villa Planchart in Caracas (1953-1957), the private residence of the art collectors Anala and Armando Planchart, who commissioned Gio Ponti to design it from top to bottom as both architect and interior designer. Its embracing, sinuous silhouette is said to capture the architect's luminous spirit and masterful approach to form.
Reissue and versions
The datasheet dates the armchair 1953-57 / 2015 and says that today it has a rigid polyurethane frame, a soft polyurethane counter-frame and a cushion, upholstered in the Molteni&C textile range, with the option of differentiating the component parts. In the Villa Planchart version it recalls the original colours conceived by Ponti for the villa in Venezuela.
