Background
Thau & Kallio is the design duo of Jakob Thau and Sami Kallio. Thau was born in Sweden and raised in Denmark and holds a master's degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design; Kallio was born in Finland, grew up in Sweden and holds a master's degree in design from the Gothenburg School of Design and Crafts. Both are trained cabinetmakers.
Signature Style
&Tradition says that the two are fascinated by materials and methods and share a deep affinity for wood and hand craftsmanship, with a firm focus on the components that make up a design. They apply classic techniques in new expressions to revitalise the Nordic narrative.
Notable Works
Their best-known collaboration with &Tradition is the Betty series, which began in 2019 with a stackable chair with a webbed seat and has grown to benches, counter and bar stools, armchairs and counter and bar chairs.
