Biography

Background

Born in Germany, Philipp Mainzer studied product design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and architecture at the Architectural Association, both in London. In 1995 he co-founded the furniture brand e15, named after the postal code of its first workshop in London's East End. Parallel to building e15 he practised architecture in New York, and he has continued to do so since returning to Germany in 2001.

Signature Style

His furniture for e15 is defined by essential forms in solid wood that leave the natural characteristics of the material visible — the approach e15 describes as the pioneering use of solid wood in its purest form. As an architect, he leads PMO, an office that works on commercial, residential and cultural projects with a consistent, progressive conceptual approach.

Legacy

Mainzer has received international awards for many of his designs, which are identifying icons for e15 and part of several permanent museum collections. He is a member of the executive committee of the German Design Council and an honorary member of the Deutsche Designer Club, and he is creative and managing director of e15 together with his partner, art director Farah Ebrahimi.
