Overview
BACKENZAHN Black Oak is the 2021 anniversary edition of Philipp Mainzer's side table. e15 introduced it for the design's twenty-fifth year as part of e15 SELECTED.
Construction
European oak is coloured by a tannic-acid reaction using a mixture of natural ingredients, then given a waxed surface. The oak's own acid content makes the resulting appearance vary from piece to piece.

Story
Twenty-five-year edition
In 2021, e15 marked twenty-five years of BACKENZAHN with this Black Oak edition. The manufacturer places the anniversary piece within e15 SELECTED and credits company founder Philipp Mainzer.
A reactive finish
The black appearance comes from a tannic-acid reaction in the oak; e15 says natural ingredients initiate that process. Because each piece carries its own acid content and structural character, the resulting colour is unique and may vary.
