Collection Story

Origin

BACKENZAHN™ was designed in 1996 by architect and e15 founder Philipp Mainzer; according to e15's milestones, the first stool was sold in 1997. e15 calls it a modern design classic and an identifiable icon for the brand, part of several museum collections. For its signature form and detail the centre of the tree is used, and the cracks that form in the legs as the solid wood seasons make every piece unique.

Design Language

An oblique cut through the crack creates the wedge-shaped edge typical of the family, and e15 uses components with cracks up to a width of ±1.5 cm as long as the design is not affected. The stool has a shaped seat and the side table a flat top; both are offered in oiled European oak, and the anniversary edition is coloured by a natural tannic-acid reaction.
