Biography

Background

Jasper Morrison (born 1959 in London) is an English product and furniture designer. He studied at Kingston Polytechnic (graduating in 1982), took a master's degree in design at the Royal College of Art in 1985 and also studied at the Berlin University of the Arts. A childhood encounter with the Braun SK 4 radiogram helped draw him to design.

Signature Style

Morrison is known for the refinement and apparent simplicity of his work — "objects should never shout." With Naoto Fukasawa he curated the Super Normal exhibition in 2006, celebrating ordinary, well-made things free of gimmicks.

Notable Works

  • Thinking Man's Chair (Cappellini) and early work for SCP and Vitra
  • Glo-Ball lamps for Flos (from 1998)
  • The TW 2000 tram for Hanover, products for MUJI, Punkt., Alessi, Magis and Emeco

Legacy

Called "one of the most influential product designers of our time" by Alice Rawsthorn, he received the Compasso d'Oro Career Award in 2020 and was appointed CBE the same year; his work is in MoMA, in the V&A and at the Design Museum.
