Biography

Background

Francesco Binfaré is an intellectual, artist and designer, born and living in Milan, who learned drawing and painting from his father. Since 1960 he has practised art in the industrial field, above all as artistic director of research centres and of project promotion, involving architects and designers in creating products that became historical pieces of Italian and international design.

Signature Style

Binfaré studies how bodies look for their favourite position — tram passengers in Milan, sunbathers on the rocks in Salento — because, in his words, "a sofa is the portrait of the way we want to sit". His sofas break the fixed back and seat: parts recline, rotate or move freely, often supported by Edra's Gellyfoam® and Smart Cushion technology.

Notable Works

For Edra: L'Homme et La Femme (1993), Angels (1996), Flap (2000), On the Rocks, Sfatto, Standard and Grande Soffice. He also created the pop-art Sky Kiss tapestry for Flap.

Legacy

Called to Edra by Massimo Morozzi in 1992, Binfaré opened what Edra calls "a new season" of sofas with extraordinary expressive and innovative strength; the company names him "the great maestro of freedom".
