Description

Overview

Flap is Francesco Binfaré's sofa for Edra, which Edra dates to 2000. The page calls it an original typology for a sofa contained in only fourteen centimetres of depth, one that renews the traditional concept of sitting and multiplies performance. The sleek upholstered base offers nine parts that can each recline at six different angles, and each can be used at will as backrest, armrest, headrest, seat or footrest.

Construction

Edra's article "Body and Soul of the Project" counts 128 steel parts and 16 special hinges hidden in the padding, which is divided into 184 multi-density polyurethane sections, in a section only fourteen centimetres thick. Edra's journal says the back can be concealed, lined up with the seat to give a flat multifunctional structure.

Story

True freedom

Edra's journal says it approached Francesco Binfaré out of its "obstinate dream of a dynamic comfort adaptable to all situations". After the L'Homme et La Femme sofa of 1993 and the Angels chaise longue-cum-sofa of 1996 came the Flap sofa in 2000. Binfaré argued that "true freedom" could only be achieved by rethinking the sofa's unchanging back and seat, and in Flap the back can be concealed, lined up with the seat to give a flat multifunctional structure.

Many uses, many coverings

Edra's page names the uses: single sofa, day bed for two, workspace when almost completely horizontal, conversation spot for a group of people. Edra's journal places the Flap in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall and records the twentieth anniversary of the Flap in 2020. Binfaré created the pop-art Sky Kiss tapestry for it, and the research with Swarovski that began in 2001 led to the 750,000-gem Diamond covering.
