Biography

Background

Arik Levy was born in Tel Aviv in 1963. After taking part in a group sculpture exhibition in Tel Aviv (1986) he moved to Europe in 1988, and graduated with distinction from Art Center Europe in Switzerland in 1991. A formative period in Japan shaped his language of restraint; in the 1990s he created stage installations for contemporary dance and opera. He lives and works in Saint-Paul de Vence and Paris.

Signature Style

Levy calls himself sculptor, artist, designer and thinker, and Vibia describes him as "designer, technician, artist, photographer, and maker". His work explores the interplay between organic growth and systemic order, "where the organic collides with the engineered, and the invisible becomes form" — most visibly in his Rock series and large-scale public sculptures. "The world is about people, not objects."

Notable Works

For Vibia he designed Wireflow (2013), Nexum, Sticks, North, Rhythm, Structural and Ghost. Wikipedia lists the Arik sofa for Ligne Roset, the SH05 Arie shelving system for e15 and the sculpture RockGrowth 808 at the Atomium in Brussels. Wireflow won Best of Design Plus at Light+Building 2014 and a Wallpaper* Design Award 2014.

Legacy

His works are in collections including the Centre Pompidou, the V&A, The Baker Museum and the DKM museum. He was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2009 and in 2021 opened his private Sculpture Park in Saint-Paul de Vence.
