Description

Overview

Film director Billy Wilder was a long-time friend of the Eameses and wished for a recliner on which he could sleep briefly in the breaks of a film shoot. Vitra says the ES 106 grew out of that wish. Soft cushions and leather upholstery make it a place to stretch out.

Construction

The chaise is padded leather upholstery with six fixed cushions and two loose ones, carried by a die-cast aluminium base with a smooth powder coat. Zippers connect the six cushions to each other, and the cushions are attached to the aluminium frame.

Specifications

450 mm wide, 1920 mm long, 730 mm high. Leather comes in 16 colours or, as Leather Premium F, in 22; the base is finish 40, chocolate. Vitra describes the chaise as intended for residential use only.

Story

An idea from Hollywood

According to the factsheet and the Soft Pad family text, the Soft Pad Chaise came from Billy Wilder's search for a recliner for short naps or for resting between takes. The page dates the design 1968.

Cushions and frame

Six cushions joined by zippers are fixed to the aluminium frame, and two loose cushions add comfort. The group is one Vitra has made for decades in the same quality.
