Description
Overview
The EA 222 is the lounge chair of the Eames Soft Pad Group: a high back over a low seat, and a tilt that adjusts itself to the weight of whoever sits down, which Vitra holds largely responsible for the comfort of the chair. The matching stool is the EA 223.

Construction
Five sewn-on cushions over polyurethane foam, in fabric or leather, make up the upholstery. Cast aluminium makes up the profiles at the sides, the spreaders, the arms and the four-star foot, with a polished, chrome-plated or powder-coated surface; and the backrest tilts back on an adjustable mechanism. The factbook lists the chair as a swivel model on glides.
Specifications
650 mm wide, 800 mm deep and 1005 mm high. The covers come in three fabric ranges (Laser RE, Cosy 2, Track) and in leather, either plain or Premium F, each with a Plano back panel. The base is 01 chrome, 03 polished aluminium or textured powder coat in 12 deep black, 60 dark bordeaux or 37 chalk.
Story
The lounge model
Vitra dates the EA 222 to 1969 and calls its comfort ultimate, crediting the high backrest, the low seat and a tilt mechanism that adapts to the weight of the user.
Chair and stool
The factbook files the EA 222 and the stool EA 223 together under the heading Lounge, with the EA 223 as the matching footrest.
