Description

Overview

Children's Stool NE60 is a four-legged children's stool by Alvar Aalto for Artek, marked 1934. Artek considers it the most elemental piece of furniture: the legs attach right under the seat and need no complicated connecting elements.

Construction

Four solid-birch legs and a solid-birch seat edge-band carry the round seat, which is cored in solid birch or birch plywood. Its top can be birch veneer, laminate or linoleum, or fabric or leather upholstery. The stool stacks and belongs to the original L-leg system of standardised components.

Specifications

  • Overall size: 38 x 38 x 38 cm
  • Legs: four, solid birch
  • Stacking: yes
  • Origin: Finland

Story

The most elemental piece

Artek calls Children's Stool NE60 hardwearing and versatile. In its words the stool is the most elemental of furniture pieces, since the legs attach straight onto the round seat.

A spiralling tower

The stool's geometry lets one stool sit on another, and Artek pictures the stack as a spiralling tower sculpture. The stool draws on Aalto's L-leg parts, with solid birch for the four legs and the seat edge-band.
