Biography
Background
Yabu Pushelberg is a design studio founded in 1980 by the Canadian designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg. Molteni&C says it started with an emphasis on interior design and has grown into a multidisciplinary practice, with offices in New York and Toronto and a team of more than a hundred creatives and professionals. Wikipedia places the Toronto studio in a former food distribution centre on Booth Street and says the New York studio opened in 2001 and later moved to a heritage building on White Street in Tribeca.
Signature Style
The studio designs buildings, interiors, landscapes, lighting, furniture, objects and graphics, and Molteni&C quotes its motto: "We design places and products: immersive environments, compelling destinations, and considered goods." The page adds that the same attention to detail runs from tabletop objects to expansive developments.
Notable Works
Wikipedia dates its first major interior project, a Club Monaco store in Toronto, to 1984, and names hotels for W Hotels, Four Seasons, EDITION and Park Hyatt, and retail projects such as La Samaritaine and Bergdorf Goodman. Its product collections include designs for B&B Italia, Ligne Roset, Marset and Stellar Works; for Molteni&C it designed the Surf and Sway sofas, the Sway coffee tables, the Theo beds and benches, club chairs and stools, and the Tivalì 2.0 kitchen.
Legacy
Wikipedia reports AD100 Hall of Fame and Elle Decor A-List recognition, and that George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg were appointed Officers of the Order of Canada in 2014. Molteni&C says Wallpaper*, Elle Decor, Hospitality Design and the Business of Fashion have named the studio among the world's most influential.
