Biography

Background

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer and interior architect working across objects, furniture, interiors, architecture and bespoke limited editions. His official studio biography places his birth in the south of France in 1974; Zanotta’s official profile gives 1975. He first trained in sculpture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art, then studied furniture design at Les Arts Décoratifs. Zanotta says that his father was a sculptor and that this artistic environment shaped his early direction.

Signature Style

The studio describes a practice rooted in nature, heritage, materials and craftsmanship. Its account of his work joins sculptural sensitivity with simple lines and a wish to make pieces that last. Zanotta describes his language as natural shapes with smooth, organic, fluid and structured lines. His Made in Situ project makes the relationship between territory, craft and material explicit: the studio works with Portuguese earth, sea, cork, stone, bronze and vegetal fibres, and develops pieces through exchange with craftspeople.

Notable Works

His interiors include the Sketch restaurant in London, which the Sèvres institution identifies as an early success, as well as work for Montblanc, Yves Saint Laurent and Air France. Furniture collaborations named by the studio and institutions include Saint-Louis, Hermès, Ligne Roset, Cinna, Ceccotti Collezioni, Tai Ping and Bernhardt Design. For Zanotta, the official designer page lists Arom, Calla and Derby; Zanotta also states that he has worked with the company since 2005. The Mobilier national’s Transmissions project developed a table, chair and sideboard with its research and creation workshop.

Legacy

Duchaufour-Lawrance established his own creative studio, Neonata, in 2003. The studio biography says he has been based in Portugal since 2017 and divides his time between collectible design furniture and Made in Situ, an edited project in Lisbon launched in 2020. His studio records awards including the 2007 Maison & Objet Designer of the Year, the 2011 Red Dot Product Design Award, the 2012 GQ Best Designer, the 2015 VIA label and two 2016 NeoCon Silver Awards. The Mobilier national and Sèvres presentations document his continuing dialogue with French craft and cultural institutions.
