Biography

Background

Anderssen & Voll is an Oslo-based design studio run by Torbjørn Anderssen (born in Elverum, 1976) and Espen Voll (born in Trondheim, 1965). Both come from creative families — Anderssen's parents were a musician and a teacher, Voll's a ceramist and an architect. After graduating from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design and the Oslo National Academy of Art, they co-founded the design group Norway Says in 2000, forerunners of the international orientation of young Norwegian designers. Anderssen & Voll was established in 2009.

Signature Style

The duo prefer to stay open rather than follow a fixed method, aiming for emotionally driven designs "with souls". For Muuto they describe a good product as one that builds on tradition while breaking its rules, using small surprises to prompt a moment of reflection in the user.

Notable Works

For Muuto: the Outline sofa family, Oslo series, Doze lounge chair, Rest, Settle, Connect and In Situ modular sofas, Five pouf and Framed mirror. Other collaborators include &Tradition, Magis, La Palma, Hem, Audo, Ariake, Vestre and Røros Tweed. In 2015 they launched their own homeware brand, Nedre Foss.

Legacy

The studio has been named both Norwegian and Scandinavian Designers of the Year and has received Dezeen, Wallpaper* Design, Red Dot and iF awards. It has launched The Anderssen & Voll Grant, an annual NOK 300,000 grant for young Norwegian furniture and interior object designers.
