Description

Overview

The PK9™ Chair was designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1960. Fritz Hansen's fact sheet calls it a side chair, also known as the "Tulip chair" because of its unique shape. The shape is characterised by three pieces of satin-brushed stainless steel that act as a column, as legs and as carriers of the leather seating element.

Construction

  • Seat shell: nylon inner shell with a leather cover, glued at the back and loose at the front; the fact sheet says this enhances comfort
  • Base: 3-legged, satin brushed stainless spring steel (configurator: brushed spring steel, matt)
  • Upholstery: leather (Aura, Grace, Haze and Natural ranges in the configurator)

Specifications

  • H 77 × W 58 × D 58 cm
  • Weight 9 kg
  • Not stackable

Story

A sand imprint and boxes of clay

Fritz Hansen reports that the inspiration for the shape was a sand imprint of the designer's wife left on the beach. In the course of the design work, Hanne Kjærholm sat in boxes of clay in search of the best and most comfortable solution. The chair is also known as the "Tulip chair" because of its unique shape.

Three pieces of steel

The fact sheet describes a 3-legged base in satin brushed stainless spring steel. The same three pieces of steel act as a column, as legs and as carriers of the leather seating element.
