Overview

The Mogensen 2212 Sofa is the 2 seater, 158 cm model of Børge Mogensen's 1962 sofa design. Fredericia's drawing labels 158 cm across, 81 cm deep and 80 cm high, with the seat at 43 cm; the sheet gives the weight as 53 kg.

Construction

According to the sheet, all stitches are piped and the sofa is covered in leather or fabric. Solid wood legs are fixed and built into the inner frame of wood. A webbing of jute and rubber band carries the seat, and the cover on the frame is non-removable. Each of the seat, back and arm cushions is its own piece with a removable cover; the filling is chosen as a foam core wrapped in down, or foam and down mixed in separate chambers.

Story

The 2212 page's own account

Fredericia's 2212 text says that Børge Mogensen wished to create the ultimate sofa and drew the first 2212 for his own home in 1962. The same passage describes the sofa as "probably the most iconic sofa in mid-century Danish design" and says it stands in embassies, corporate headquarters, private homes, galleries and museums worldwide.

Workshop and materials

The page's impact section lists the Fredericia upholstery workshop, in Denmark, as where the sofa is made, and a separate module calls the furniture solid wood that takes on a patina if kept well.
