Description
Overview
The Cross Check Chair is Frank Gehry's 1990 bentwood armchair for Knoll. Hard white maple veneer strips form its frame, back and seat in an interwoven construction.
Construction
Strips are laminated six to nine layers thick with high-bonding urea glue. Thermoset adhesive stiffens the assembly, while restricted glue in the woven seat allows the strips to flex together. A fish-shaped foam cushion is optional.

Story
From bushel basket to furniture
Gehry brought Knoll an idea for a new kind of bentwood furniture in 1989. His childhood memory of sturdy apple crates led to experiments in which narrow strips could provide both the structure and the sitting surface.

Three years of prototypes
Knoll established a workshop for the project, and the collection reached the Museum of Modern Art's Frank Gehry: New Furniture Prototypes exhibition after three years of investigation.
