Description
Overview
The Bertoia Diamond Chair is a wire lounge chair that Knoll lists as model 421L on its design page and credits to Harry Bertoia, 1952. Knoll's shop sells it as the Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair, in a seat pad or a full cover style.
Construction
- Welded steel rods for seat and base, in polished or satin chrome, 18-karat gold plating, or a durable black or white Rilsan finish
- Seat pad or full cover in KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck leather; the design page has both held by concealed mono-filament and metal hooks, the shop has the optional seat pad on metal snaps
- Plastic glides on the sled base; Knoll logo stamped into the back of the base
Specifications
- W 33½ in x D 28 in x H 30 in (about 851 x 711 x 762 mm); seat height 16¼ in, seat depth 19 in (Knoll shop)
- Weight 15.5 lb; the shop lists the chair as fully assembled
Story
Frame and finishes
The shop gives the frame as welded steel rods in a bonded Rilsan, polished chrome or 18K gold-plated finish, and the design page's finish tab lists eight frame entries: Chrome, Polished; Chrome, Satin; Gold, 18k Plated; Black; White; and a Two-Tone Frame in Blue or Red. Wikipedia describes Rilsan as an adhesive-fused, nylon-dipped finish that resists scratches, chips and chemicals.

Seat pad or full cover
Wikipedia says cushions are secured to the chair with lock snaps and full covers are stretched over the wire seat basket and hooked to it. Knoll's shop page lists the seat pad as secured with metal snaps and offers a full cover or a foam seat pad. The design page names a vinyl seat pad as suitable for outdoor use, and the shop names a Chain Link seat pad in solution-dyed olefin.
