Biography
Background
Seppo Koho (b. 1967, Rovaniemi) is a Finnish architect, interior architect and designer. He studied interior architecture and furniture design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and later earned an architecture degree from Tampere University of Technology. After working in several Helsinki architecture and interior design offices, he concentrated on his own interior architecture studio.
Signature Style
Koho describes his lamps as illuminated spaces seen from the outside, like cosy houses glowing on a dark evening. He works with clear basic shapes - squares, circles and triangles - multiplied into circular forms, hides the light source, and lets light emerge through thin birch slats that cast soft patterns. He handcrafts the first wooden prototypes himself.
Notable Works
- Secto 4200 pendant (launched 1999), the first Secto lamp
- The Secto and Octo lamp families for Secto Design
- Teelo table lamp
- Furniture for Aptero, P. O. Korhonen and Martela
Legacy
Koho has worked with Secto Design since its founding in 1995 and has designed most of its collection. His awards include the Ornamo prize (1997), an iF product design award (2010), and selection as Finland's furniture designer of the year in 2015.
