Biography
Background
Nils "Nisse" Strinning (8 December 1917 – 10 May 2006) was a Swedish architect and designer, born in Kramfors. He studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm in the 1940s, where as a student he designed a dish rack of plastic-coated metal wire. With his wife, the designer Kajsa Strinning (1922–2017), he formed one of the best-known partnerships in Swedish design.
Signature Style
String Furniture describes Nisse as an architect and inventor with an eye for everyday needs and the imagination to solve them, while Kajsa explored, refined and documented the ideas in construction drawings. Their work followed the belief that form should always follow function: light steel-wire constructions, plate racks, wire trays and practical household objects.
Notable Works
- String® shelf (1949, with Kajsa Strinning), winner of the Bonnier Folk Library bookshelf competition
