Collection Story

Origin

String® System began as the String shelf, designed by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning for the 1949 Bonnier Folk Library competition, which called for an affordable bookshelf that was easy to ship and assemble. It won, became an instant success and in 1954 took a gold medal at the Milan Triennial. String Furniture, which acquired the manufacturing rights, calls it a design classic that is designed and made in Sweden.

Design Language

Slim wire panels carry loose shelves; the plex panels of 1954 were the first major complement and give a quieter, transparent look. The measurements have not changed since 1949, so old and new parts fit together, and a yearly colour palette keeps adding combinations.
