Description

Overview

String® Pocket was designed by Nisse Strinning in 2005, and String Furniture says it became his last contribution to the Scandinavian design portfolio. The company introduces it as "The little one. A beginning of something great." Unlike the String® shelving system, which is planned piece by piece, Pocket is one complete shelf made of two wall-hung panels and three shelves. The page also says it is sold as a complete wall shelf but is just as flexible as String® System.

Construction

String lists powder-coated steel (fine textured) and lacquered MDF with gloss 30 as the materials. In the Oak/White version the page names an oak veneer and white-lacquered panels (RAL 9016). The shelf brackets are moulded from zinc containing 60% recycled material and are recyclable. Strength, durability and safety were tested to EN 16121. The assembly instructions carry the line "Made in Sweden."

Story

The little one

String's Pocket page calls the shelf "The little one. A beginning of something great." It says Nisse Strinning designed Pocket in 2005 and that it became his last contribution to the Scandinavian design portfolio. The assembly instructions state that the String bookshelf was originally created in 1949 by the Swedish designer Nisse Strinning.

A metal interpretation

In 2020 String launched the first interpretation of the original Pocket, in all metal, by Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström, with perforated shelves that take accessories such as rods and hooks. The wood-shelf Original described here has shelves in walnut, ash or oak, or monochrome colours.
