Biography
Background
Fernando Campana (1961–2022) and Humberto Campana (born 1953) were Brazilian brothers, designers and artists. Their official studio history says Humberto was born in Rio Claro and Fernando in Brotas, and that both grew up in Brotas in São Paulo state. Humberto studied law at USP, while Fernando studied architecture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in São Paulo. They opened Estúdio Campana in São Paulo in 1984.
Signature Style
Their studio describes a practice based on material experimentation, transformation and reinvention. It elevates everyday and ready-made materials through addition, mixing, improvisation and handwork, in pursuit of an authentically Brazilian language. Edra similarly presents their work as a union of textures, ordinary materials and creative chaos that turns simple solutions into poetic objects.
Notable Works
- Desconfortáveis, a series of around forty chairs developed in the 1980s
- Vermelha Chair (1993), shaped through the exploration of a bundle of rope
- Inflating Table (1996)
- Projects 66: Campana/Ingo Maurer at MoMA (1998)
- Banquete series (begun 2002)
- Corallo Chair (2004, as dated by MoMA)
Legacy
MoMA credits the duo with leaving an indelible mark on Brazilian design through their attention to materials often considered mundane or trivial. The official studio frames their legacy around creative freedom, Brazilian culture, handmade knowledge, collaboration, social transformation and a sustained connection with nature.
