Cab Night Bed

Overview

The Cab Night (L50) is a leather bed by Mario Bellini for Cassina. Both the sheet and the page give the design as Mario Bellini, 2015. The page calls it a king size bed in leather and presents it as an iconic, modern design that carries the saddlery skills first shown in the Cab chair over to a bed. The headboard is offered upholstered in a traditional version or fixed to the wall.

Construction

The sheet lists a structural frame in solid poplar with solid beech reinforcements, solid wood feet, polyester fibre wadding in various weights with light velvet, a central cross piece and joints in black-painted iron, a differentiated-density block of polyurethane foam as padding, and saddle leather and leather in price-list colours. The page gives the frame and legs as poplar plywood and solid beech.

Leather and saddlery

On the sheet, the bed stands out for a structure and legs wrapped in leather, with saddle stitching left visible where the parts meet. The padded headboard narrows slightly and is marked by a stitched seam down its centre; it is covered in fine leather and hide that has been given a special tanning so that it feels soft and comfortable.

From the Cab chair

The sheet credits the work on thick, full-bodied materials to the craft knowledge Cassina built up when it made the Cab chair. The leather parts are cut on a numerically controlled machine and finished by hand afterwards.
