Overview
The AJ Table Lamp is a 1957 design by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, produced by Louis Poulsen. Its shade is painted white inside and gives a pleasant, downward-directed light; the screen can be tilted about 90 degrees up and down.
Construction
- Parts: wet-painted spun steel shade and an injection-moulded zinc base
- Switch on the lamp base, with a black plastic cord of 7 ft
- Light source: one A-19 bulb on a medium (E26) base, 15 W maximum, not included

Story
Made for a hotel
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Table Lamp in 1957 for Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel, a building for which he created almost every detail. Louis Poulsen says the lamp's white inner shade gives a pleasant, downward-directed light, while its adjustable screen changes the light distribution.
An enduring table lamp
Louis Poulsen describes the AJ Table as a design icon and a statement piece even when unlit. Since its 1957 launch, the maker says, it has become synonymous with minimalist elegance and timeless design.
