Description

Overview

The AJ Floor Lamp, made by Louis Poulsen, is credited to Arne Jacobsen and was made for Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel. One passage assigns the design to 1957; the Danish Design Legacy section instead calls 1960 its original design year. The product description says: "The floor lamp yields a pleasant downward directed light with its white painted inner shade." It adds that tilting the shade changes how the light is distributed.

Construction

  • Finish and parts: wet painted; spun steel (shade) and injection-moulded zinc (base)
  • Cord: 8 ft black plastic cord with switch on the cord
  • Light source: 1 × E26-base bulb, 10 W max, bulb not included; the page says the socket suits LED (including some smart bulbs) and incandescent bulbs

Specifications

  • W 10.8" × H 51.2" (approx. 275 × 1300 mm); the Length field is blank
  • Weight 7.5 lbs
  • Colours (alphabetical): black, dusty blue, electric orange, pale petroleum, soft lemon, polished stainless steel, warm grey, warm sand and white; AJ Brass editions are described separately

Story

The shade and the light

Louis Poulsen connects the lamp to Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel. Its main description gives 1957, but the later Danish Design Legacy section says 1960. A technical note gives the screen roughly 90 degrees of vertical adjustment and says the white-painted interior produces soft, comfortable light.

Parts and finish

The reference model is black, wet painted (RAL 9011, gloss 30), with spun steel for the shade and injection-moulded zinc for the base. An 8 ft black plastic cord carries the switch, and the lamp takes one E26-base bulb of up to 10 W, which is not included.
