Description
Overview
The Aeron Chair by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick for Herman Miller has been the benchmark for ergonomic work seating since its debut in 1994. Instead of foam and upholstery, the seat and back are suspended in an elastomeric mesh, so the chair stays breathable and visually light. The current chair is the version Herman Miller remastered in 2016 with co-designer Don Chadwick.
Construction
The seat and back use 8Z Pellicle, an elastomeric suspension with eight tensioned zones of support (four in the seat, four in the back) that removes pressure points and keeps the sitter cool. Harmonic 2 Tilt under the seat provides a balanced recline, and PostureFit SL supports the sacrum and lumbar region to keep the spine in its natural S-shape. Herman Miller states the chair contains more than 50% recycled material, including ocean-bound plastic added in 2021.

Story
From research to revolution
Bill Stumpf had spent years researching how people sit, first with the Ergon chair (1976) and then, with Don Chadwick, the Equa chair (1984). Their 1987 Sarah Chair for the elderly experimented with advanced kinematics and a woven elastic suspension. Asked by Herman Miller to design the next-generation office chair, they carried those ideas into Aeron and replaced upholstery with a breathable mesh called Pellicle. The chair launched in 1994 and entered the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
Remastered to perform today
In 2016 Herman Miller and Don Chadwick updated Aeron from the casters up, adding the 8Z Pellicle, an adjustable PostureFit SL and a refined tilt. Ocean-bound plastic followed in 2021, and in 2026 the palette gained Nightfall and Jasper alongside a lighter aluminium base.
