Biography
Background
Thomas Bentzen is a Danish industrial designer. According to his own site he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design, in 2003, worked at Studio Louise Campbell from 2005 to 2010, first as senior designer and then as partner, and founded Thomas Bentzen Industrial Design in Copenhagen in 2010. He was Design Manager at Muuto from 2011 to 2013 and Head of Design there from 2013 to 2015.
Signature Style
His studio describes the work as shaped by simplicity, rationality and functionality, with simple, narrative designs that make meaningful products for everyday life. It is rooted in the Danish design tradition, with weight on material knowledge, craftsmanship and rational industrial manufacturing, and prototyping and model making are key to the process. HAY calls him a methodical designer who creates fine-tuned products that are both engaging and durable.
Notable Works
His site lists Muuto projects including the Loft chair, armrest chair and bar stool, the Linear Steel, Linear Wood and Linear Systems series, the Cover side chair, lounge chair and bar stool, Enfold and the Dedicate and Linear lamps. It also lists Takt's Soft chair, stool and bench, Beoplay EX and EQ for Bang & Olufsen, the Shade Bin for HAY and KIN travel bags for Projectkin.
Legacy
Muuto says his products have received international recognition at fairs and exhibitions around the world, and that he co-founded the design collective REMOVE. HAY adds that he is a board member of the Danish Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition and an occasional teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
