Biography
Background
Miguel Milá Sagnier (Barcelona, 7 February 1931 – Bilbao, 13 August 2024) was a Spanish industrial and interior designer. Born into a Catalan family with strong ties to the arts — his uncle Pedro Milá y Camps commissioned Gaudí's Casa Milá — he studied at the Barcelona School of Architecture without finishing, and began as an interior designer in the studio of his brother Alfonso Milá and Federico Correa in the late 1950s.
Signature Style
Faced with a shortage of materials and products, he designed his own lamps and furniture, producing them through Tramo, co-founded with F. Ribas Barangé and E. Pérez Ullibarri. He called himself a “pre-industrial designer”: noble materials, hands-on processes, models and prototypes — updating tradition with honesty and rigour.
Notable Works
- TMC and TMM lamps (early Tramo designs, still produced by Santa & Cole)
- Cesta lamp and its family (1962 per Santa & Cole's product pages)
- M68, Americana, Manila
- NeoRomántico benches
Legacy
A co-founder of ADI-FAD, he received Spain's National Design Award (1987), the Creu de Sant Jordi (1993) and the Compasso d'Oro (2008). His work is held by the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona.
