Biography
Engineer, painter and architect
Gabriele Mucchi was born in Turin in 1899. Zanotta describes him as both an engineer and a painter whose work took him to Milan, Berlin and Paris. Back in Milan, he became active in the Corrente circle and helped establish the Realist Movement.
Rationalist practice
Mucchi contributed to Milan's Rationalist architectural group and worked with Piero Bottoni, Pietro Lingeri and Giuseppe Terragni on competitions and built projects. He participated in several Milan Triennales as a painter or architect. His Via Marcora house of 1934 is identified by Zanotta as an early Milanese example of Rationalist architecture; in 1935 he designed and made metal furniture.
Urban work and teaching
He belonged to CIAM and MSA. With Bottoni he contributed to the experimental QT8 district, where a prefabricated house was erected in 1947, and he helped prepare Milan's master plan. After 1955 painting became his exclusive focus. From 1956 to 1961 he taught in East Berlin and at the University of Greifswald, briefly returning to architecture in 1960.
Designs for Zanotta
Zanotta links Mucchi to Genni and Susanna. The manufacturer records a substantial exhibition history in public and private institutions in Italy and abroad. He died in 2002.
