Biography
Background
Front is a Swedish design studio based in Stockholm, today run by the duo Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren. The group was formed in the early 2000s by students of industrial design at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm: Lagerkvist, Lindgren, Charlotte von der Lancken and Katja Pettersson (Sävström). Pettersson left in 2009 and von der Lancken in 2015.
Signature Style
Front's work spans furniture, products, textiles, lighting and installations. Their projects often tell a story or stage an illusion — mirrors, reflections, animals and natural phenomena recur throughout their portfolio, from metallised lampshades that look like molten glass to furniture that plays with surface and perception.
Notable Works
- Melt for Tom Dixon ("Melt – Tom Dixon crushed by Front")
- Horse Lamp and Blow Away Vase for Moooi
- Anomaly for Moroso, projects for Kartell and IKEA PS (PS Svarva)
- Hideout Lounge Chair for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, Button sofa for Swedese, shower products for Axor
Legacy
Front has exhibited at MoMA in New York, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and in London at the V&A and the Design Museum. The group received the Designer of the Future prize at Art Basel Miami in 2007 and, in 2010, the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize and Elle Interiör's designer of the year award.
