Biography

Background

Brian Alexander is a Michigan-based designer, artist and workplace consultant who earned a bachelor's in industrial design from the University of Illinois and founded Brian Alexander Studio in 1998. Herman Miller lists the studio in Douglas, Michigan, and his own site describes a thirty-year career with 28 patents.

Signature Style

Herman Miller quotes him as an observationalist who has compiled an owner's manual for humans since the late 1980s and draws on it for every project. He says that getting a design right is more about perfecting human interaction than aesthetics, and that a good design is complete with the minimum amount of bits while remaining open to growth.

Notable Works

For Herman Miller he designed the Renew Sit-to-Stand Tables, whose paddle height switch follows basic intuitions about direction, as well as Renew Link, Nevi Link, the Personal Side Screen and the Logic power access range. Cellstor entered the permanent collection of MoMA in 2001, and City Light was shown at NeoCon in 2009.

Legacy

His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and his sculpture was recognized at the Palm Beach International Sculpture Biennale in 2006.
