Collection Story
Origin
Puff is Saskia Huebner's 2022 lamp collection for Normann Copenhagen, a contemporary, sculptural reading of the classic rice paper lamp. It honours one of Asia's oldest lamp-making traditions, in which rice paper shades hung in temple halls for centuries. The collection was prompted by a trip to Japan, where Huebner came across endless variations on the rice paper lamp. It set out to balance sculptural playfulness with functional minimalism, and it invites the owner to arrange different voluminous shapes together.
Design Language
Rice paper makes immense volume possible without wasting material or making the lamp heavy. It also shields the light source, so the lamps give a soft, natural, warm light and read as organic sculptures in a room. The lightness gives the lamps the look of puffed-up balloons, and the four shapes take their names from that look. Bulb is named for its form and its lighting function. Twist is two circles merging into one. Bubble has a charming silhouette resembling a little, joyous character. Multitude has several circles intertwined. Each lampshade has a collapsible construction.
Materials and Light
The pendants have rice paper lampshades. The table lamp and the floor lamp pair rice paper with a pole and base of white powder-coated steel. A layer of soft EVA foam beneath the base guards the floor or tabletop, and a small channel there guides the cord along the surface towards the outlet. Both of these lamps come with 2 m of white textile cord. The pendants are rated for a maximum of 6 W LED, against 2 W for the table and floor lamps.
